Autumn 2010 Conference biggest ever

Wednesday 13 October 2010

The ALEP Autumn 2010 Conference held on 12 October 2010 attracted 176 enfranchisement professionals including property managers, surveyors, solicitors and intermediaries associated with leasehold enfranchisement.

Autumn 2010 Conference biggest ever

The conference was at a new venue - One Birdcage Walk in London's Westminster - after the event outgrew its previous location, the International Coffee Organization.

The Autumn Conference included an optional extra session in the morning attended by 26 people that dealt with using social media such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to generate more clients. Despite some short-lived WiFi glitches, delegates were shown how to set up new Twitter accounts on their laptops at the event. They also learnt how to incorporate the online application into their marketing and how to best use the tools it provided to keep in touch with other professionals and prospective clients.

The keynote speakers were:

- Barrister Ellodie Gibbons of Tanfield Chambers who spoke about legal loopholes in enfranchisement
- Partner at Pemberton Greenish Janet Powell, who shed light on the complex tax considerations associated with enfranchisement

Delegates also chose from two contrasting syndicate sessions:

- Kelton Court 1 Year on: the effect on deferment rates and the future landscape
- Material Enhancements: freeholders' imposition of obligations as part of the transfer of the freehold interest

The conference also celebrated not only its seventh event but the 100th ALEP member, Tim Farrington of solicitors Streeter Marshall. He was presented with a certificate and James White of chartered surveyors Fanshawe White won £100 in Marks & Spencer vouchers in the associated prize draw.

Honorary Secretary Alex Greenslade outlined in a brief presentation the findings from recent market research focus groups conducted by ALEP.
